Hypnosis FAQ
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered state of conscious, characterised by a feeling of deep relaxation, in which the sub-conscious becomes open to positive suggestion. You may not have been aware of it, but it is common to experience trance-like states during your normal daily life. Those times when your attention becomes so focussed on what you are doing that you lose awareness of your immediate environment. Perhaps when you have been reading a good book, or knitting or playing sport.
Some people have funny ideas about hypnosis largely due to the techniques employed by stage hypnotists. Hypnosis used for the purposes of entertainment is a world away from the advanced use of hypnosis for clinical purposes.

Why use a hypnotherapist?
A hypnotherapist will use hypnosis in order to help a person enter a state of deep relaxation in which they can use the power of their subconscious mind for positive change. When the mind and body are deeply relaxed a new perspective on negative thought-patterns and emotions can be achieved. Old problems and habits can be dissolved. The hypnotherapist will help the person see their life in a new light. Fantastic and permanent results can be achieved in the space of a few sessions.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, provided they want to be. There is no question of you being forced into a trance against your will. People experience hypnosis in different ways, all of them enjoyable.
Will I lose control?
Absolutely not, but you may feel more relaxed than you have done in a long time! The objective is to help the client regain control of their lives and their thinking patterns. Most people are fully aware of everything that happens during a session of hypnotherapy. It is just that you are so relaxed that things feel different when you enter deep trance.
How accepted is hypnotherapy within the medical profession?
The use of hypnosis is now becoming widely accepted within the mainstream therapeutic and medical traditions. It is more than probable that your local Hospital Trust will have a registered hypnotherapist practising for them. They are willing to pay for this because they can see it works.
